New Sets For Red Dwarf
When we last saw the crew of Red Dwarf, the ship might have looked a little lacking and a bit less then solid then in the original runs and that was because the Red Dwarf sets used in the 2009 mini series Back To Earth were computer generated.
As the new Red Dwarf series is being filmed with an audience live in the studio like in the show’s glory days on the BBC this kind of trickery will not be possible, leading to new sets to be built for the show.
The new sets are being built at Shepperton Studios and were created by a former designer for the programme Primeval, according to Red Dwarf producer Charles Armitage:
“There are workshops full of Red Dwarf sets. We’ve got a brilliant designer, Michael Ralph, who did the last series of Primeval, and my feeling is the sets will very much become the fifth star.”
The original sets for the cult science fiction-comedy classic were lost long ago to time and the rubbish skip, as Armtigae explains:
“We’ve got no Red Dwarf ship because it fell off the shelf; we’ve got no sets, they’ve all been destroyed.”
However, Armitage goes onto say that the new sets are not just carbon copies of the old sets, in fact there are many promised improvements that should make them a sight to be seen when the series hits our screens in late 2012 on Dave:
“It’s not a copy. There are lots of new parts to it – everything has been started from scratch – but you’ll know the roots of it.”
