Fiennes: “Complete Nerd” About Bond
Ralph Fiennes might have played Harry Potter‘s nemesis Lord Voldemort and inspired millions of kids to dream big in the same way that Star Wars did for their parents when they were kids, but it was the print adventures of Ian Flemming’s James Bond that Fiennes obsessed over in his younger days:
“I used to be a complete nerd about the books and the detail in them. They are fantastic.
There was Fleming’s obsession with different kinds of champagne and caviar. He kind of fetishises these things.”
As for Fiennes role in the upcoming Bond film, Skyfall, all Fiennes will say is that he plays a “government agent” and that is a ll he is “allowed to say”.
Fiennes also double dipped by starring and directing in the Shakespearean play Coriolanus, which he said was a challenge on a few levels:
“I wanted to be present for everything so it was exhausting but I was fed by that. There was an adrenaline rush. I had been worried that I would have sleepless nights but I was in a state of exhaustion and slept solidly.
I was scared. You dread that there will be real problems during filming. But that didn’t happen and it was great to know it was going well.
I loved the whole thing of creating a world. I just think that I wanted to make this film so badly.”
He also spoke briefly on his role in another cult favorite in the badly received remake of The Avengers in 1998, where he played Mr. Steed alongside another Bond alumni, Sean Connery, who played Sir August De Wynter in the film and was James Bond in seven feature films:
“The problem was that it did not reinvent enough. It tried to honour the old TV series.”
The twenty third Bond film, Skyfall, will be released on the 26th of October 2012.
