Judgement Is Coming!

The first posters and trailers for the new Dredd movie have finally been released. The movie, which stars Karl Urban as Dredd and Olivia Thirlby as Judge Anderson will be released in September.

In this second attempt to “movie-tise” the famous British comic strip from 2000AD, the story takes place (as expected) on a post-nuclear armageddon Earth. Survivors live within megacities, vast urban sprawls which protect its citizens from the radioactive desert environment populated by mutants (known as “the Cursed Earth”).

The main story takes place in Mega-City One, where its police force are known as judges. They have the power of judge, jury and executioner to combat crime. One such judge is, Dredd (Karl Urban), a senior Judge who teams up with cadet Judge Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to stop drug dealer Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her traffic of the reality-altering drug Slo-Mo.

As you will see in the trailer, the essence of Mega-City One and the feel of the strip seems to have been captured…

Those of you with long memories will recall the previous attempt to bring Dredd to the silver screen. Although visually impressive, the Stallone movie from the 1990s was poorly received, although it makes reasonable post-pub fair on ITV2 every other Saturday night.

What do you think? Is Urban channeling the real Dredd, as seen in 2000AD?
