Dennis Kelly’s unique Channel 4 drama Utopia is being remade for the US, by no less than David Fincher for HBO!
HBO’s Utopia reunites Fincher with Gillian Flynn on script duties. Their last collaboration was for 20th Century Fox and New Regency on a big-screen adaptation of Flynn’s best-selling phenomenon Gone Girl.
With HBO and Fincher, its the perfect combination and home for a show that is really like no other. Utopia starred Fiona O’Shaughnessy, Alexandra Roach and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. It centred around the fans of a key and iconic graphic novel, who are thrown into a dark conspiracy thriller of their very own when they come into contact with the manuscript for the sequel. Unfortunately, this is much more than just a book and all sorts of people are hunting them down, keen to get their hands on it. The group suddenly find themselves in a game of shifting loyalties, conspiracies and shocking twists as the true meaning of the book is slowly revealed. Its a trail of double-crossing, deceit, violence and death… But above all its a weird, quirky and bizarre world they inhabit, with a great deal of darkness and black comedy at its heart.
This surreal and unusual piece of television has a very unusual and arresting vision by Director Marc Munden and is topped by an equally original electronica sampled quirky score by Cristobal Tapia de Veer (published by Silva Screen and available from Amazon).
Series II in the UK is due this Autumn.
